2008 Elections / The Roles of CCA and Citizens

What is CCA’s Political Platform for 2008

1. Open, Professional, and Ethical Government that is Transparent
2. Preservation of Our Natural Resources
3. Responsible Development
4. Opposition to a Casino of any kind in Charlestown
5. Fiscal Responsibility

How Did CCA Arrive at it’s Platform

CCA relied on citizen feedback from the results of its Citizens Survey, e-mails, letters, phone calls, and personal conversations with citizens. We wanted to build a election platform that reflects what is important to you, the citizens of Charlestown. We want to incorporate your vision of Government in Charlestown should be (not what it has been since the election of November of 2006.

What is CCA looking for in Candidates to Support

We want to find candidates who believe in the same vision as you, but also have the character, ethics, and commitment to excellence in public service that some current Town Council Members lack. We want to elect candidates who will listen to citizens when making public policy decisions. We want Town Councilors who will respect citizens rights and appreciate citizen involvement in Town commissions and meetings. We want Town Councilors who will work with citizens to build a political partnership that will lead to informed decisions that benefit the entire Town and not special interest groups. But most of all we want Town Councilors who can be leaders and restore Good Government to Charlestown.

What Role will CCA Play in the 2008 Elections

CCA plans to be an advocate for Candidates (regardless of political party) who share the citizen’s vision for Charlestown and have the character, ethics, and leadership qualities necessary to help restore good government. We will be actively campaigning for these candidates and educating voters about their choices. CCA will also actively campaign against anyone whose previous record shows they do not respect the citizens or the citizen’s vision for Charlestown. If there are candidates who acted as enablers to help current Town Councils pursue special interests agenda’s instead of the citizens agenda we will also actively campaign against them. We plan to provide both Direct and Indirect Funding to support candidate campaigns for election and oppose candidates for reelection. We hope to panel discussions for citizens to meet the candidates and we will be using our e-mails and web site to get out the facts and help educate voters on which candidates would best support the citizen’s vision and help restore good government.

CCA will be Conducting Fund Raising Events for Candidate Contributions.

The fund raising goal for CCA is to collect and spend $10,000 the maximum allowable under the BOE rules for registered PAC organizations. That means we can spend up to $1,000 for each candidate we support or oppose. The maximum contribution from any individual is $1,000. As a PAC we are required to collect certain information form each citizen contributor and keep financial records of each contribution we receive. During today’s meeting we have volunteers ready to accept contribution either during today’s presentations or at the end of our presentations. Any contribution you can afford to make is appreciated.

What Role Can Citizens Play in the 2008 Elections

CCA would like citizens to consider participating in the following ways.

1. Consider going door to door in your neighborhood and collecting e-mail addresses for the CCA e-mail list from interested parties in your community.
2. Consider hosting a meet and greet event at your home for neighbors to meet a candidate running for office endorsed by CCA.
3. Consider running for public office either on the Town Council, the Planning Commission or the School Commission.
