I read with great interest, and a touch of surprise, about Larry LeBlanc’s interest in substantial wind turbines on his land in Charlestown. Part of my surprise is that I couldn’t approve more energetically.
I spent a great deal of effort, researching and testifying for years, hoping to defeat the “Ninigret Hamlet” project on his 82 sensitive moraine acres, which I felt and still do was a land rape scheme.
This is different, and I will support it in whatever way I can. I am disgusted by the opposition to Cape Wind in Massachusetts, which relies mainly on esthetics. This is fundamentally a matter of opinion. I have seen these turbines in several other locations, and to me they are beautiful, majestic and stately, especially when you pause to think what they represent: a window to a sustainable future. Compared to a coal-fired plant, which is more beautiful?
I have repeatedly attempted, and so far failed, to find a scenario whereby I could mount an appropriately sized turbine on my own land that would at least break even financially. If it emerges I remain interested. It is the principle that matters: I am prepared to put my view where my mouth is.
So, to Larry LeBlanc, here are some words that, after those years of hearings, I never thought I would utter, and I hope others do so as well: You go guy!
