As I sit back and ponder the results of the November 4th 2008 local elections in Charlestown, I am filled with both happiness and hope. While I congratulate the winning candidates in this election, I believe the real winners are the citizens of Charlestown.
I want to thank the citizens of Charlestown for their thoughtful and informed votes which will usher in a fresh start in our town and hope for a productive Town Council and an effective government. Over 4100 registered voters cast ballots in this election and only about 12% used the straight party lever. That leads me to believe that an overwhelming number of voters looked at the credentials of the candidates, and not what party they represented.
My hope, is that this newly elected Town Council can set the tone for a return to open and good government. I believe that we are all hoping for a government where officials treat each other and its citizens with respect and civility. Also, I hope that the citizens who resigned from various town committees because of unfair criticism and lack of support will come back and once again volunteer to serve the town. I also hope that those citizens who held back from volunteering their skills and experience may now what to consider contributing to a new administration. There are many talented and caring individuals in Charlestown, and your contributions are needed if we hope to have an effective and efficient town government.
Sincerely,
Daniel Slattery, President
Charlestown Citizens Alliance
