To: The Honorable Charlestown Town Council
Re: The Reappointment of Dr. Milton Krantz to the Charlestown Zoning Board
I rise to address the Town Council in regard to my nomination for reappointment as a member of the Charlestown Zoning Board. I have been on the Board for more than 10 years. I have served people all my professional life and have continued to do so in my retirement, and have enjoyed the work and most importantly the service to my community. Most people, I believe, who came before the board would agree that my decisions were made fairly, and with the best interests of Charlestown in mind. Many of these recent years were served in spite of serious illnesses.
At the last Charlestown Town Council meeting, the Council was deadlocked on a 2-2 vote to reappoint me as well as three (3) alternate members. I am well aware of the politics behind this vote.
The result of this vote has left the valuable and necessary work of the Board in legal peril. Despite our solicitor’s verbal opinion that I and the two (2) alternates would continue to serve until replaced, there are no assurances that the composition of the Board and my status as a legally constituted voting member would not be challenged in Superior Court by an aggrieved applicant or politically motivated individual. The risk presented could result in invalidating applicant approvals given by the Board until this stalemate is broken. This could place the Town in legal jeopardy and harm innocent citizens who simply want to proceed with a land use project.
I had hoped to retire when I was ready, not when a vengeful spiteful mean-spirited Mr. Mageau decided that he would get even because of personal animosity toward me. I refer, of course, to the assault case I filed against him last year – just one of a string of charges that had been filed against him over the years. However, I will not allow politics to come before the concerns of the people appearing before the Zoning Board.
Therefore, I withdraw my name from consideration for reappointment to the Zoning Board, knowing that in the upcoming November elections, the citizens of Charlestown will see that my actions here tonight have shone light on the very problem that has caused Charlestown politically motivated divisivenesss ever since Mr. Mageau was elected. It is my sincere hope that the voters remember my actions in November, and remove Mr. Mageau from this Council. I wish to thank the Council and the citizens of Charlestown for the opportunity to serve the community and I look forward to returning to public service after the November election.
