Having an opinion shouldn’t invite abuse

There is an old adage that says, “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.” Apparently this is a truism that James Mageau has either ignored or never learned.

In a recent article about the Charlestown Citizens’ Alliance (“Charlestown Citizens Alliance — Trying to Effect Climate Change,” 1/25), Mr. Mageau’s anger this time was directed at alliance president Dan Slattery. Mr. Mageau used abusive and hyperbolic language, which only reflected poorly on the author.

Apparently Mr. Slattery’s worst sin is being new to Charlestown, and daring to speak his mind concerning town government. This “sin” has meant that he has given time and effort to an organization dedicated to better government in Charlestown.

If the “old timers” in town had paid more attention to Mr. Mageau’s ambitions while he was running for Town Council, newcomers like Mr. Slattery would not have had to step forward.
