A member of the Fire Department has contacted us with the information below about getting help to pump out basements.

Call the Charlestown Dispatcher 364-1212 to get on the list. The list is long so it may be a few days before a crew can get to you.

The equipment the departments have will pump water down to about 5-6 inches. If you have less water than that the FD can't help. If you are on the list and the water is less than that or if you were able to get other help please call the dispatcher and take your house off the list.

There needs to be somewhere to pump the water. If your house is still surrounded by flood waters, they need to recede first. Outside access to the basement is needed either through a bulkhead, window, etc.

If the water is rising and nearing your electrical panel call the dispatcher as soon as possible. You may also need to contact National Grid to cut power from the outside before any pumping can take place.

NO CHARGE FOR GARBAGE AND SOLID WASTE RELATED TO FLOOD
The Department of Public Works has announced that they will have waste amnesty through Saturday April 17, 2010 for people who need to dispose of flood related waste materials. People must separate the waste that was caused by the flood so that the CRCC staff can weigh and account for and obtain reimbursement for the waste materials. Questions should be directed to the DPW office at 364-1230 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
